- Sonic Homebrew
Posted by erise on April 18th, 2009 at 2:13 AM
Emulation news has been rather slow lately, so I decided to create an article. What about you might ask? Well, the answer to your inquisition is... SONIC HOMEBREW!!!!!!
You may have already known that there are quite a few Sonic homebrew games out on the internet. This special feature will point you to a few of them. They are probably not finished and may have bugs, but they are still fun for a Sonic fan like myself to check out. Some of them are only for Windows, alas, but I've verified that they run in Windows XP in VMware Fusion.

For Windows/DOS. There are a few original levels included in Project: Mettrix and one that shows how closely the game's engine can replicate the original Genesis Sonic games. In addition, there are fan levels you can download and it is even possible to make your own Sonic levels. Download it here.

For Mac OS X!!! Sonic Nexus is like what a Sonic CD sequel would have been like. The demo version that's available only has one level, but it's awesome. Download it here.

For Windows. Emerald Ties: Crossing Fates uses an unique art style and features written dialogue before levels. There are quite a few levels to play in this one. Download it here.

For Sega Genesis emulators. Flickies are annoying and really slow down Sonic 3D Blast. But now you don't have to collect them anymore. Sure, the game is ridiculously easy without them, but it's also a lot more fun. You'll have to hunt a little tiny bit for the download link to this one.

OK, that's all for this article. If there's interest in these things, I'll do another one with other Sonic homebrew that I didn't mention here. In the meantime, check out TSSZ for a lot more Sonic homebrew information.
- Tell Richard Bannister What You Think

Richard Bannister has recently started two forum threads looking for ideas for the next versions of his emulators. The first thread asks whether PowerPC support should be retired in his emulators. The second thread asks for interface suggestions for the upcoming Cocoa versions of his emulators. So if you haven't voiced your opinion already (and have an opinion), do it now!
