About

PCSX is a Playstation emulator for the Mac. This port of PCSX includes many of the Windows version's features, along with some new ones. It has been some time since the last release of PCSX. The previous release was a 1.6 preview that included support for Intel Macs. However, not all the features were included.

Known Issues in PCSX 1.6 preview:

  • Missing input from iShock II controller on PPC
  • Switching controller plugins while a game is running might make PCSX stall
  • x86 dynarec core can cause crashes in certain games
  • Freeze files are currently broken
  • CD-audio playback is jerky
  • Sound playback is jerky at times
PCSX is plugin-based.

Compatibility

Though requiring generally higher system specs than Flarestorm, PCSX has a relatively high level of compatibility. Compatibility is better when using a real BIOS. The correct location for the BIOS is /Volumes/Macintosh HD/YourUserName/Library/Application Support/Pcsx/Bios

Playing PlayStation games with PCSX

BIOS

  • North American games - use BIOSes that end with the number 1. (SCPH1001, SCPH101, SCPH7501)
  • Japanese games - use BIOSes that end with the number 0. (SCPH1000, SCPH5000, SCPH100)
  • European games - use BIOSes that end with the number 2. (SCPH1002, SCPH5502, SCPH102)
  • Make sure there is only one BIOS in the BIOS directory!

Region Settings

  • System Region auto-detection is broken, so use the following settings:
  • North American & Japanese games - set the System Region to NTSC.
  • European games - set the System Region to PAL.

General Settings

  • Turn the Dynarec CPU Core off!
  • Turn the Simulate PSX BIOS off!
  • Turn the Graphics Plugin hacks off!
  • Turn the Sound Plugin's High Compatibility Mode on!
  • Full screen mode can be activated by pressing Escape (Esc)!

Game Fixes & Hacks

  • Turn all of these off, unless you are using one of those specific games.

Graphics Issues

  • If the graphics are lagging, turn the Graphic Plugin's Use Frame Skipping option on!
  • If there are missing graphics (FF7 battle swirl), turn the Graphic Plugin's Use Frame Skipping option off!

Controller Setup

  • Try using the SimpleInput plugin first. If it doesn't work, try the HIDInput plugin (make sure you configure it).
  • If the HIDInput plugin works, you can try configuring it for a Gamepad. If you can configure a Gamepad but it doesn't work in the game, use a utility (such as USB Overdrive) to map the Gamepad to key-presses, and try re-configuring the plugin.

CD Images

  • PCSX can run games from disc images (ISO,BIN,TOAST,IMG, or MDF) with the cdr mooby plugin.
  • The cdr mooby plugin comes with compressIt, a command-line based tool that will compress disc images to save space.

PCSX Usage

  • Intel users - use PCSX 1.6 (PCSX 1.5 crashes when starting emulation).
  • PPC users - use either PCSX 1.5 or 1.6.

Once you've run through those configuration options, it's time to play! Put your PSX Game CD in the drive. Wait for it to show up on the Desktop. Hold Shift and choose File > Run Bios. Hopefully, your game will start playing in a few moments.
